1 in 31 Americans in jail… wait, what?!
I thought it must have been a misprint at first… but no, this is the truth. According to Reuters:
One in every 31 U.S. adults is in the corrections system, which includes jail, prison, probation and supervision, more than double the rate of a quarter century ago, according to a report released on Monday by the Pew Center on the States.
The article itself is an interesting read, but the most shocking thing about it is that headline statistics – 1 in 31, or more than 3%. Apparently the land of personal rights and free speech is also the land of the most jailed citizens.
