Year 1, Term 2, Week 5: Practicals, dinners and generally being busy
Although noticeably less busy than week 4 (at least on paper / Google Calendar), week 5 still turned out to be just as hectic as the week that preceded it. Linear Algebra was replaced by Groups, Rings and Fields, which has proved to be interesting enough so far, and probability was replaced by statistics (optional for me), but since it clashes with practicals etc I wasn’t able to do it. A week into the second half of term, I’m quite glad… I’m rushed off my feet as it is!
So, what’s new? I got my first imperative programming practical finally finished, it took absolutely ages but I think it’s all sorted now. In week 6 I have no practicals, then in week 7 and 8 I have to start / finish two separate practicals – one for D&A, one for Imperative. Funnily enough, on the Imperative Problem sheet I was doing this evening one of the questions on it related directly to the practical question – so in doing the question on the sheet I was able to write a bunch of Oberon code, which I’ll hopefully be able to use in week 7 when I’m doing the practical – and I’m hoping that it’ll run a bit smoother than the previous one. And the less I say about the D&A practical the better… it’s just plain weird.
I had formal dinner at Mansfield on Friday and dinner at Trinity on Sunday. Michael Blunden came to Oxford for the weekend, so David and I showed him around Oxford – for some reason I’ve never been to the covered market before… Anyway, that brings the total number of colleges that I’ve had dinner in to 3, and hopefully more will follow soon, if possible before the end of this term.
In the rather more unfortunate news, spending so much time outside on Saturday in a t-shirt, although bright and sunny, seems to have taken its effect – I’ve had an annoying cold since Saturday, which even now (Tuesday) doesn’t show any signs of going away. Ah well, that’s life.
(And, in other historic news, I made myself sandwiches in my room today!)
So, 3 weeks to go until the Easter holidays. Still have lots to do before I head home – (many many) Computer Science problem sheets to do (not my fault… people know what I mean), analysis to (try to) learn, and general fun is always good to squeeze in somewhere.
